Archivist: Graham Hawkes, BA, FRSA, FRGS, FGMS, Hon. FNMSM, Hon CIL
E-mail:
Graham Hawkes read English and History at the University
of Leeds, where he was a member of the University Choir. Upon
graduation he proceeded to a PGCE. During his National Service
he was as an Instructor in the Royal Army Education Corps. The
first four years of his teaching career were spent as Senior
English Master at Sheerness Technical
High School for Boys. He then became a lecturer at Isleworth
Polytechnic and at retirement was the Head of Division of Humanities
& Community Studies at West Thames College.
For most of his life Graham has been a member of a church
choir and has sung in residential courses at a considerable number
of cathedrals. He is a Trustee of the Alexandra Palace Organ
Fund and is actively involved in schemes to complete the restoration
of the Father Willis organ, once described as "The best
concert organ in Europe." He regularly attends the Thursday
lunchtime recitals given by our Honorary Organist, Richard Townend,
at the Church of St. Margaret, Lothbury.
On Sundays he is to be found as a sidesman at All Saints, Margaret
Street. Not only is the church Butterfield's seminal work of
the Gothic Revival but it also has an impressive liturgical and
musical tradition. The church is frequented by several Fellows
of the Academy of St. Cecilia.
Graham is currently Chair of Governors of a Voluntary Aided
Church of England school and sits on numerous committees. His
hobbies include travel, architecture and London. These interests
relate to his membership of a variety of bodies: Life Fellowship
of both the Royal Society of
Arts and the
Royal Geographical
Society, membership of the
Victorian
Society, The Organ Club and he is a Friend of the
Victoria
& Albert Museum. He is a Freeman of the City of London
and a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Musicians.
