Michael Barkl

Michael Barkl was educated at the NSW State Conservatorium
of Music, and proceeded with postgraduate studies at the University
of New England, Sydney Institute of Education, and Deakin University.
He holds a bachelor of music degree (composition and double bass),
a master of music with honours (composition and musicology),
a graduate diploma in education (secondary music teaching), and
is a doctor of philosophy (musicology). He also has technical
qualifications in recording engineering, business studies, and
management communication.
As a performer Michael played the Sydney rock venues in
the late 1970s before becoming a freelance bass player in the
early 1980s. In the l990s he widened his interests, performing
Sri Lankan music on sitar for various Sri Lankan national celebrations
in Australia, including the 50th anniversary independence day
celebrations in Canberra, and playing recorder and rebec with
"The Waits", an early music group.
As a composer Michael has written cabaret music, a full-length
family musical commissioned by the Australian Bicentenary Council,
and extensive concert music. His orchestral music has been performed
by the state orchestras under Stuart Challender and Patrick Thomas.
His solo piano works have been performed by Michael Kieran Harvey
and Sally Mays. Barkl is a fully represented composer at the
Australian Music Centre.
As a musicologist Michael has published analyses in Australian
journals, and contributed a number of articles to the Oxford
Companion to Australian Music and the New Grove Dictionary of
Music and Musicians.
As an educator Michael was a pioneer of contemporary music
education in the Vocational Education and Training (VET) sector
and has been head of the music department at TAFE NSW, Illawarra
Institute, since 1987. He was a core member of the curriculum
team that developed the suite of VET courses in contemporary
music and vocational classical music for TAFE NSW, and is the
Contemporary Popular Music (CPM) Adviser to the AMEB (NSW)
