Since October 1990, Paul M Ellison has been Director of Music and Organist at San Francisco's historic Church of the Advent of Christ the King, an Episcopal parish in the Anglo-Catholic tradition. There he directs the church's professional choir, Schola Adventus, in a comprehensive repertoire of choral music ranging from Gregorian Chant to first performances of contemporary works. The emphasis is on unaccompanied renaissance polyphony. He also directs the Gregorian Schola Cantorum in a twice-monthly Latin Mass.

A native of Liverpool, England, he was educated at the Royal Academy of Music, London, where he studied organ with Christopher Bowers-Broadbent and harpsichord with Virginia Black, gaining the Recital Diploma for Organ Performance. He also studied at Queens' College, Cambridge. He holds a B. Mus from London University, and an MA in musicology from San Jose State University. He is currently completing Ph.D studies at Cardiff University.

During his time in London, he was Associate Organist at St. Pancras Church, and Director of Music and Organist at St. Mary's Church, The Boltons, in London's fashionable Chelsea. He emigrated to the United States in August 1988, and is currently a member of the music faculty of San Francisco State University, and Assistant Editor of The Beethoven Journal, the periodical of the American Beethoven Society..
